The Deep History of the White Stag Complex

The University of Oregon’s new home in Portland is located in the city’s oldest and most historic neighborhood: the Old Town district, which was declared a US National Historic Landmark District in 1977.

The White Stag Project was composed of three different bulidings: the Bickel (1883), the Skidmore (1889), and the White Stag (1907).

The first businesses in these buildings read like a cross-section of Portland’s history. These buildings once housed a logging machinery company, a tent and outdoor supply factory, and even a china importer. More (PDF)

We installed huge composite beams bolted together, gesturing to the old but clearly new. We respected the building integrity. That is what the building is about - it has a soul.
