What to do in an emergency
Step-by-step guidance for an active threat, evacuation, a medical emergency, sheltering in place, hazardous material, and fire. Plus what to write down now, before anything happens.
Cards, keys, parking, and more.
Most of these start online. Anything that needs a person happens at the Campus Safety office, Campus Center Room 135.
Register the car before you park it.
Students, faculty, and staff can park in the designated zones: P1, P2, P3, P5, and P6. There is no P4. Every vehicle has to be registered with a Zone P permit.
A different safety topic every month.
Campus Safety runs awareness sessions and hands-on training through the academic year, one topic at a time. Building drills happen alongside them.

Fire drills
Every building is drilled to test the alarms. Academic buildings once a year, residential buildings each term. Leave every time, even if you are sure it is a drill.
- Leave as soon as the alarm sounds.
- Use the stairs and fire exits, never the elevators.
- Tell emergency personnel if anyone is missing, trapped, or needs help.
- Do not go back in until you are told you can.
Reducing your risk
- Pay attention moving to, from, and around campus, particularly after dark.
- Stick to well-lit routes.
- Carry a charged phone with emergency numbers already in it.
- Report anything that looks wrong, straight away.
- Campuses are safest when people look out for each other.
Emergency phones
Emergency phones, also called call boxes, are fixed around campus and connect straight to dispatch, which is staffed around the clock. Pressing the button sends an officer whether or not you say anything. If you are frightened or cannot speak, press it anyway.
Elevator phones
Every elevator on campus has a phone beside the controls, as state law requires. They work the same way, and dispatch can see which elevator you are in.
Lost something, or found something.
Come to the Campus Safety office in Campus Center Room 135, or email campussafetypdx@uoregon.edu with your contact details and a detailed description.
To collect an item you will need identification and something that shows it is yours, which can be a detailed description or a receipt. If found property has contact details on it, staff will get in touch with the owner directly.
Oregon law sets out what a finder has to do, and the thresholds are lower than most people expect. Property worth $250 or more triggers a notice requirement within days of finding it. Handing the item to Campus Safety is the simplest way to meet the obligation.
If it is happening now, call 911. Otherwise call Campus Safety on 503-412-3700, come to Campus Center Room 135, or file a report with UOPD.
Copies of incident reports and other police records go through UOPD's public records process.
Feedback about an officer or about how an incident was handled, whether critical or appreciative.
The university publishes crime and fire statistics for the past three years, as the Clery Act requires, along with its prevention and reporting policies.
UOPD is the sworn police agency for the university, operating around the clock. Campus Safety in Portland works alongside it.
The university division covering emergency management, environmental health, and risk. UO Alerts and the emergency procedures sit here.
